Despite the fact that two of my top six radio stations have been playing non-stop holiday music (one since the FIRST WEEK IN NOVEMBER), it still doesn’t seem like the holiday season (or my birthday – lest we all forget I was born on the horrendously bad day before Christmas). Maybe it’s the unseasonably warm weather, or the lack of holiday decorations in my neighborhood, or the fact that no one has tried to trip me grabbing the last (insert some popular gift item) on the shelf – but it hasn’t seemed much like Christmas.
Until last night.
I was out buying secret holiday gift(s) for my “second family” over in Quincy (who are lovely enough to let me spend a ridiculous amount of time in their home -which is why I am buying said gift), and one of the items I was observing and trying to decide if I should possibly purchase happened to be quite heavy. I couldn’t get it off the shelf and into my cart to think over. I struggled with it for a good three minutes before I gave up entirely.
And then Santa came to my rescue.
I swear to god. This man, looked exactly like Santa – if Santa wore hooded sweatshirts and mismatched sweatpants. And smelled like clove cigarettes.
Santa put the item in my cart, faced it so that it could be rung up with out being moved out, and then told me to come find him if I needed help getting it in my car.
How sweet was that? Very, the answer is very.
When I finally made it to my car (unassisted!), I flipped on the radio and heard the first notes of “All I Want For Christmas Is You*” and couldn’t believe my luck.
And then it all came together – all this luckiness and happiness – that was the last gift I have to buy for anyone this year. Y-A-Y. Now I can just sit back and enjoy!
* I have a lot of favorite Christmas albums/artists: The Carpenters, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Nat King Cole, to name a few, but I’m sorry but Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is the best Christmas song out there and if you argue with me, I will chalk it up to ignorance and simply feel bad for you. And also ask you to comment and please provide me with the name of the holiday song you fancy most. (Even if you are wrong about it’s awesomeness.)

i was totally waiting for you to say “then Santa punched me in the stomach and took off with my gift”
Okay you can feel bad for me…Mariah’s song barely holds it next to the Ratpack Christmas Album. Sinatra. Martin. Davis Jr. Nuff said. ;o)
Sarah, your comment is PURE GOLD.
This rendition of Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” by Olivia Olsen, as sound track for Juan and Ximena’s vlog Christmas card.
Ditto on Sarah’s comment. :)
I watched Love Actually on Sunday night!
Christmas in Hollis – Run DMC
I agree, Jenny. Despite many other Christmas favorites, Mariah’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is still my chart topper. :)
Oh, and Love Actually? Can I marry that movie? I love, love, love it. I was watching it the other night and Nick called. He asked what it was and I gave some weak explanation (“it’s about love & Christmas & people’s relationships”). I got in return, “Yeah. Sounds like something I’d like” (dripping with sarcasm). Never fear, though, I’ll make him watch it someday!
OMG – Sarah, that’s hilarious
Jen, the following is a quote from that “rocket scientist” Mariah Carey:
“Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can’t help but cry. I mean I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.”
Maybe with all the cash she rakes in from that foolish song, she can buy some fly-swatters and food for the underprivileged that haven’t died yet!
It IS the best Christmas song ever. It doesn’t matter how foul the mood, “All I want for Christmas is you” will fix it, guaranteed.
Daddio: not true.

Well she still should have pushed herself away from the “food bag” and shipped her continuous stash of twinkies and cupcakes to the needy!
Haha … Daddio. I be a giver.
I was at this huge hunting store in NC over the weekend and this came on. But it wasn’t Mariah’s version.
No backup vocals.
No goodness.
almost as good as “all i want for christmas is you” is mariah’s “christmas (baby please come home)”
Although I do enjoy MC’s “All I want for Christmas is you” my all-time favorite Christmas song is Fairytale of New York by The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl- check out the
video
I like “All I Want for Christmas” too, but nothing tops Elvis’ “Blue Christmas!”
Good call, Eileen. That’s also my favorite!
