My coworker A and I decided to saunter outside for lunch today. This sounds like a typical day for office employees in the city. But me and A are boring and weird and eat at our desks most of the time. And after today’s lunch, I know why.
We headed over to Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay. Per A’s request, we stopped at the ever popular Boloco for burritos (I got a classic with tofu and guacamole. Yum). We sat outside, enjoyed the sunny warm weather and chatted about a number of things.
And then, innocently enough, I said “I like that boutique’s signage.” To which A responded, “Let’s go.”
We packed up and headed up the block to Whim, a small walk up boutique with very expensive looking clothes in the window. But also, a sale sign.
Good enough for us.
Despite the fact that “she shouldn’t be buying anything”, A grabbed a whole bunch of stuff – “just to try on”. Of course the first pair of jeans she tried on were so perfect, we decided she had to have them. (A just got out of a 8 year relationship. She NEEDED those jeans.)
I was holding strong at not trying anything on.
But then A grabbed another armful of stuff and what’s the harm in just trying something, A pointed out.
What’s the harm? I fell in love with the god damn dress I tried on. THAT’S the harm.
And within 10 minutes we were both at the register, she with THOSE JEANS! and me with the dress.
But seriously. It is THAT cute. (I bought it on a Whim … GET IT? GET IT!)
And if I could find a picture online ANYWHERE, I promise I would post it, because it looks a HELL of a lot cuter than it sounds:
A black cotton, satin and crocheted mini dress.
Ugh. That sounds hideous. I promise it’s not! It’s BCBG!
I’m just going to have to take my own photo. Or you just go to Whim … there’s one left, it’s on the back rack. You’ll know it because it was cheapest full price item in the whole store. No joke.
This is a terribly anti-climatic entry. Please go back to your day.

The first time I read this I thought it said..black cotton, satin and crotchless!!
I need a nap.
You just made my entry 4 MILLION times better.
thanks!!
This is why I was actually happy when my office moved 10 miles further away from the nearest TJ Maxx. Because everyone knows going out for lunch = SHOPPING.
I am 5 miles closer to AJ wright though. And Dots. Jealous?
ugh – i work in back bay too and every time we all go out, someone comes back with a pair of shoes… when Filene’s basement opened across the street, we had the trifecta – H&M, marshalls (in the building no less) and now Filene’s. dangerous.
Oh my God, I hear you. I used to work near Downtown Crossing and it was a VERY REAL problem. Almost every lunch I’d have to just “check” for sales. Filene’s Basement anyone? Nine West? DSW? H&M? Real issues. I’m actually very happy that I now work in a part of the South End that is just far enough from any shopping to keep me safely shopping-free during my lunches.
