(It’s long, but I haven’t blogged in like a week and now I’m making up for it.)
When I graduated college, like a million years ago (ok seven) (but it feels like a million), my mother had saved up and gave me a pair of perfectly teeny, perfectly flawless diamond stud earrings. To this day, they are one of the things I love the most in the whole world. I wear them nearly every day, changing out of them so rarely that when I do wear other earrings, something feels wrong.
Two weeks ago I was at work, Xacto knifing away at a project when the left stud fell on the floor. I gasped and immediately picked it up. I then spent an HOUR looking for the back. Eventually I gave up and went to the ladies room. As I put my hands under the water, I happened to look down. There was the back of my earring. On the floor.
…..?
Cut to Tuesday of this week. I was sitting in a coffee house* enjoying my tea. I looked down at the table in front of me and the left stud fell out of my ear and on to the table. I spent about 20 minutes looking for the back of the earring, gave up and left.
That night, I was laying in bed, desperately trying to fall asleep when I rolled over on to something totally annoying. I flipped on my light and there in my bed was the back of my earring.
…..?
Losing it two weeks ago and finding it in the bathroom of work was one thing. But if the back of my earring was in my BED, that meant I lost it IN BED that morning and went about my day with a backless earring in my left ear. I went to the gym and ran MILES outside on the streets of Boston. Then I SHOWERED. And dried my hair by FLIPPING MY HEAD UPSIDE DOWN at the gym. I went to the coffee house after all that at 5:00 pm …. and THAT’S where my earring fell out. When I was just sitting at a table.
It’s SO bizarre. But I’m glad I still have my earrings. And yes, I’m investing in a better set of earring backs this weekend.
(Part II is behind locked doors now … juuuust in case. I don’t care who reads it, and if you want the password, just leave a comment and it’s yours – but you’ll understand WHY it’s protected now. HA! And just so you know … part two has NOTHING to do with earrings and everything to do with a bad date. A bad blind date. Yikes.)
