Help my Hair

I’m embarrassed to admit the last time I stepped into a hair salon. Mostly because I’m trying to grow my hair out and the first rule of growing hair out properly is regular trims to keep split ends in check. But also because I have done absolutely no maintenance on the absolutely gorgeous brown I had dyed my hair and it all washed out and/or was bleached out by the sun.

The last time I was in a salon? February 25th. It’s June. Sure the beginning of June, but February 25th was still, what? 14 weeks ago? (Yikes. I just looked at a calendar — it was EXACTLY 14 weeks ago. Like to the day.).

So on February 26th, my hair looked like this (with a reminder of what it looked like the day before):

And now, 14 weeks, several inches and some dirty dishwater looking color later …. I look like this:

Could I have snapped a WORSE looking picture? I think not. Seriously people ….

HALP.

I honestly have no IDEA what to do with my hair. I want to go brown again, but is it going to be gone the first time I step out into the sun? I love the length – and it took me WAY too long to grow this out to just cut it all off – but my hair has absolutely no hair STYLE to it. It just hangs. But because I really haven’t sported a long ‘do in … well basically my whole life (I’ve always been a shoulder length or shorter kind of gal) – I honestly don’t even know what my options are.

Things about my hair:
- It’s fine
- But I have A LOT of it
- This misleads people into thinking I have thicker hair than I actually do
- My hair is stick straight
- It will not hold a curl or wave
- I CAN curl it or make it wavy
- But whatever style I’ve tricked myself into thinking I can do, it will fall out within 20 minutes. Thirty if I’m lucky. Two hours if I use an entire can of hairspray.
- I have had bangs (blunt, sideswept, really I’ve run the full bang gamut)
- And like bangs (blunt, sideswept and everything in between)
- Would do bangs again
- But don’t necessarily need to
- Have no idea what to do with the rest of my hair – layers? Blunt cut?

HALP ME. I’m pretty much willing to try anything (except a perm. NO PERMS.)

Please send pics, k? Thanks!

I kind of want to jump up and down and yell “Fishing!” because I think your hair looks amazing right now.

That being said, blunt bangs could be really cute. Esp since you know you can wear bangs.

Maybe you could go in for a combination of highlights and lowlights so that if there is any fading it won’t be so noticeable.

Here’s an example of what I think could look really cute on you.

Haha if I started pointing out the fact that my layers … aren’t so much layers but weird growth — or if I did a zoomed in version so you could see my split ends – I think you’d take back that faux fishing comment. That’s why its a totally ZOOMED OUT pic. hahahhaha.

Also — I LOVE that suggestion!

Um… well… I am not going to be very helpful because in the summer especially I am sooooooo not into having long hair myself personally that I can’t advocate for anyone else having it. So due to your feelings of not wanting to chop it off… I will offer nothing.

However, I will add the comment that I think bangs might be a fun change to do, since you know you can do bangs and bang-free. Ha ha, I said “bang”.

BANG!

I have much longer hair than yours and fine, dead straight, like you. Why I would stay away from bangs in summer? They could drive you crazy if you are doing active things. Also…that whole “grow out” thing when you get sick of them. Let’s say you get your new bicycle, and you are working up a sweat, and then you have those short pieces all wet and plastered to your forehead. “No.”

As for layers? Maybe a few shorter pieces at the sides of your face, but not so short they don’t get caught up in a ponytail. Those will also drive you nuts. I went with layers for a while. The down side? I didn’t do anything with them in terms of blow drying or styling so they didn’t show their full potential. I don’t have an hour to mess with my hair in the morning. Do you?

I like your current style. Just clean up the ends you mentioned, and I second what Carissa said about highlights and lowlights. Work on going back to darker brown in the autumn. Aren’t I just full of beans today? :)

Leave it as it is. I think long hair esp with all your bike riding is perfect in the summer bc you can just throw it in a pony tail.
I would add some highlights if you are itching to switch it up. Save the dark brown for the fall when it goes with all the pretty fall colors. Just my humble opinion…
PS My bangs lasted a whopping four months before I was bored with them.
I think it took me six months to decide to get them. : )
