So this was my kitchen when I moved in:

Hmmm. What does that look like?
IT LOOKS LIKE CHRISTMAS THREW UP ALL OVER MY KITCHEN.
Who in their right mind would look at a faux green and gray marbled laminate counter top (ew) and think “Clearly that wall needs to be CHRISTMAS RED.”
Awful.
I couldn’t stand that color for more than a day and a half. So I took a look at that counter top. I put the green and gray of the counter top, the nickel pulls, and all those white cabinets and back splash in my head and decided that wall needed to both coordinate and balance all that was going on.

I chose to offset all that white and go dark, go bold – go charcoal gray!

But because I’m me, and nothing can come without some kind of twist or surprise … I thought “charcoal gray” and my head pulled some idea that I had archived way back in there, and before the light bulb could even light up over my head I RAN to the hardware store.
What did I do? Here’s a clue:

Get it?
Instead of boring, flat charcoal gray paint … I went with super fun and interactive CHALKBOARD PAINT!

The whole wall cost me under $30 (paint, roller and tape), and will provide hours of fun over the duration of my lease.
Cheers!
What’s the most fun you’ve had with a home improvement?

I am sooo stealing this idea. ;-) Looks awesome, Jenny!
Jenny, I LOVE this. ALL CAPS LOVE. I want to come visit just so I can (see your face, of course! and) draw you the best stick figure scene you’ve ever seen. I think it will involve sharks. And maybe a frisbee.
Aaannnnd now you’ve committed to it. I penciled you in (on the chalk wall).
Sarah — it’ll be PERFECT for Desmond!! And actually — you should know – there is a MAGNETIC primer that you can get (and use on any wall/surface). That could be fun for ABC magnets!!
LOVE the wall!! Looks fantastic as does the living area.
FANTASTIC!!! LOVE IT!! Can’t wait to see the after party moments…quotes, drawings, shopping lists etc. Gonna be fantastic!!!
:)
wow. i LOVE this idea. LOVE! it looks great and (almost) makes the green countertops okay :)
i love this idea! and the previous magnet idea, too! what a fun way to spruce up your rental. i’m moving later this week and am in full fledged nesting mode (i’m 7 months pregnant) and i can’t wait to make this a part of our little guys room! thanks for sharing :)
When I initially looked at this, I was all, “Oh, I love that red wall.” And then I scrolled down and saw the counterpanes. WOW. JUST WOW. You’re right.
Huge improvement.
