Art Contest with an Artsy Prize!

So I had six 10 x 10 canvases hanging above my desk (I could go look for a pic, but I’m lazy). They were painted in 6 solid colors: teal, lime, chocolate, pink, red and mocha. Over the weekend I wiped them and started making new paintings. Out of letters.

(If you are new, you should know I am obsessed with typography, letters, typefaces, etc in general. So why WOULDN’T I make art out of letters?)

Here is my creation in full:

Letter Art

And canvas by canvas:

canvas 1

canvas 2

canvas 3

canvas 4

canvas 5

canvas 6

So here’s my contest:

PART 1: Tell me what TYPEFACE/FONT all those letters are set in (be as specific as you can in describing this typeface) and
PART 2: Tell me what all those letters spell out.

A few notes on this:
There is only ONE typeface used throughout. You have to figure out what I mean about specifics, which you will if you look hard enough. (Hint: I just gave you a hint). Also, and this is most important, most of the canvases are just made up of letters artfully thrown together, but if you look hard enough you can see what this graphic designer is trying to say (Hint: I just gave you a hint there too).

Also, I’ve already posted some clues and will probably post more throughout the week.

Here’s how the contest works: comment on this entry with your guesses (you have to guess BOTH parts). The names of those people who guess correctly will be thrown into a hat and I’ll draw a winner at random at the close of the contest. During the contest, you may guess as many times as you want until you think you get it correct.

CONTEST CLOSES AT 2:00 PM FRIDAY MAY 9th, 2008.

No one is excluded from this contest since I was smart enough this time and didn’t tell anyone the answers! So any of you could win the prize.

Speaking of prizes….what is this prize you ask? YOUR OWN LETTER ART CANVAS. (I had an extra canvas lying around.)

THE PRIZE: 10 x 10 Acrylic on canvas. I call it “olive on aqua”.

And the winner gets ....

I’m a nerd and threw the word “blog” in there for good measure.

Bembo? Some of it looks italicized (oblique??) and some not. I’m too lazy to figure out the words though, and terrible at anagrams and the like anyway. So therefore disqualify myself from the contest. But I like your paintings. I also LOVE typefaces etc. a little too much.

Looks like Georgia, some italic, to me.

just sent you an email. can’t for the life of me figure out what you’re spelling… this is FUN though :)

ups, just now read about the comment. so here’s my guess in the comments again:

i say it’s definitely a century font. closest i found was (new) century schoolbook. bold italic?

the serifs / ends of the capital letters are are super-round at the ends. so maybe you accentuated that yourself or i just can’t find THE exact font.

    again, fun :D

I’m not even going to try to guess either of them, but I love the paintings and the colors!

  8. kim | May 6, 2008 | Reply

is it one word in every painting or do only all of them together make sense? and the order of the canvases is the order of the words/sentence or are they mixed up? jeesh, this is gonna keep me up all night (again) ..

Like I said above, “most of the canvases are just made up of letters artfully thrown together” … but I will give you the added clue that I am looking for two words.

  10. Calli | May 6, 2008 | Reply

For font, I’m going to guess Bodoni classic…but I have no idea what the two words are yet.

  11. Calli | May 6, 2008 | Reply

Actually, make that Bodoni Classic Bold Italic.

  12. RzDrms | May 6, 2008 | Reply

font = bodoni monotype? typeface = didone modern? i can’t see the photos here at work, so i’m just guessing.

  13. RzDrms | May 6, 2008 | Reply

calli’s two comments jumped between mine and jenny’s! like magic! i swear, i swear i didn’t cheat off of calli, interwebbers.

DUDE, I am SO OBSESSED with typography. How did we not talk about our mutual obsessions for typography and the alphabet when you were here? For shame.

I suck at guessing games, unless the answer is Bob Barker, in which case I would suggest repeatedly guessing it when playing Trivial Pursuit because I PROMISE YOU it will eventually be the correct answer, and you will infuriate everyone when you win a slice of the Trivial Pursuit pie by screaming “Bob Barker! Bob BARKER!”

(I’m sending Chris back to guess. He is Font Master.)

Also, um: If we don’t get it right, can I just buy one? With money?

Also, oh hai! longest comment EVER.

  15. Jenny | May 6, 2008 | Reply

RzDrms: You definitely didn’t! Calli is a new commenter so her comments were being held in moderation while you commented! Don’t worry :)

  16. Jenny | May 6, 2008 | Reply

Kerri – Yes, yes and YES.

I have already started working on more of these and just added a note to my latest blog entry that I am accepting custom orders ;)

  19. Jenny | May 7, 2008 | Reply

YES. Sarah knows me far too well. And could clearly be the winner…. of the content part at least.

    am i close?

  23. Jenny | May 8, 2008 | Reply

I’m not going to say if people are close … just because I already have guesses and people can guess as many times as they feel they need to until they get it right.

However, you have to guess BOTH parts. Not just the typeface, but also what it says. Again, I’m looking for two words.

    “Lorem Ipsum”

    Bodoni Italics ?

  25. Erin | May 8, 2008 | Reply

Hmm…I still think it says “Lorem Ipsum”

But maybe it’s actually “bauer bodoni std 1 bold & italicized” ?

This is apparently how I’m going to spend my morning in the office.
